Turning the Tables: KC Edition

After NPR’s Turning the Tables turned an eye to women in the music industry, 90.9 The Bridge created a local written spinoff to continue that conversation in Kansas City. I created illustrations to accompany each article. The art carried over to promotions and materials for a showcase event.

Mixtapes & Mixology

Mixtapes and Mixology combined Kansas City’s music and cocktail scenes. Four local bartenders were each given a track by a local artist and designed a drink based on how the song made them feel. Podcasts for each pair included edited interviews with the artist and bartender, plus a live-recorded performance of the song. The art direction carried through podcast pieces, series promotions and materials for a live cocktail-and-music event.

BBQ And Blues Poster

After Smoke ‘n’ Fire’s BBQ & Blues event that benefitted KCPT was held, I created a poster to be given to the local business as a thank-you gift.

Float

At Flatland’s Float event, participants mixed and matched ice cream with beers, sodas and cold brew coffee. I worked with our food blog partner and our managing editor to create the look and feel for this event, and then produced some materials myself while leading interns and a junior designer in creating others.

Origin Story: Music Edition

Flatland’s Origin Stories explain how inventions or foods that have local connections came to be. I illustrated a set of stories about how four local bands got together for a music edition. Later on, we printed the stories in a comic book that was handed out at Planet Comicon Kansas City.

Play It Forward

This member drive campaign for The Bridge was designed to highlight partnership with another community organization, Harvesters food bank. We wanted the artwork to highlight the partnership and the other organization while also fitting the radio station's brand.

20 Years of Music Discovery

90.9 The Bridge is celebrating its 20th birthday in 2021, and the theme 20 Years of Music Discovery will be used for marketing campaigns, member drives and on-air events. The direction for this theme will be used as part of the art for all of those efforts throughout the year.

Three-Brand Brochure

This index card-sized, accordion-folded brochure highlighted information about each of KCPT’s brands while bringing them together in a visually cohesive way. The piece was easy for the executive team to give to new contacts and it won a gold Philly Award for excellence in marketing for nonprofits in 2017.

Champion Community Engagement

I worked with KCPT’s membership team to create a member drive campaign highlighting the station’s local value and the need for public media in the community. The art direction I created alongside the messaging inspired supporters to recognize and celebrate their part in KCPT’s mission. Assets were used on-air, in print, on social channels, and in emails.

Who Will Lead KC

KCPT and Flatland covered the 2019 KC mayoral race and how it would affect the city’s most distressed neighborhoods. This art direction I created was utilized by other designers and myself for art for candidate debates, written content, short-form videos, and promotional materials.

Week In Review

KCPT's local public affairs show Week In Review had been on air for a long time, but was due for a new look. I worked with the production team to create new art direction that was used for a new graphics package and a new set design.

Our Divided City

Michael Price’s Our Divided City documentary explores Kansas City's East Side and whether enough is being done to make it safe. I created the title treatment, promotional materials, and maps that illustrated crime hot spots and blight. Art direction was also used to make social media graphics to engage the community during the broadcast. Our Divided City was nominated for a 2016 Mid-America Regional Chapter EMMY® Award.

Find the song…

Music discovery was the focus of this member drive campaign for The Bridge. Local musicians, volunteers, and members were asked to be photographed while expressing different feelings. Color and linework reflecting those feelings were combined with the subjects for the campaign, highlighting The Bridge as a radio station where listeners could find songs for any state in life.

Inspired by Kansas City. Made for you.

This member drive campaign for NPR music station The Bridge focused on the local aspect of the station. We wanted to bring Kansas City into the campaign, so the design uses photographs of different locations throughout the city. The Membership Director and I determined the locations to feature and took the photographs.

KCPT Rebrand

In order to reflect its evolution, KCPT overhauled its visual identity in 2016. I was tasked with designing the new logo — I worked with the team in-house to create the logo and its accompanying elements and materials. We got feedback from outside agencies and stakeholders and worked with contractors and partners to complete some elements. Additionally, I led interns in completing collateral using the new brand package.

KCPT Kids

When KCPT rebranded in 2016, I also updated the branding for local PBS KIDS brand KCPT Kids. Our elements were designed to work with those that PBS KIDS provides to local stations. Later, a 24/7 PBS KIDS channel launched in Kansas City, and elements were needed for its local content and to promotions. Using the PBS KIDS brand package as the base, I combined and arranged their elements while adding graphics that I created for local needs.

Rise & Dine with Mary

Rise & Dine with Mary was a show that premiered on QVC and featured host Mary DeAngelis and food, friends, and fun during patio-style breakfast. I created the title treatment and art direction for this show, and I worked with a video editor as the direction was utilized to create the promo.
